Safehaven’s Hope Concert sets a new milestone

The 1,000-seat auditorium was virtually full and the quality of the show testified to the immense effort put into it.
Dr Balaji Sadasivan, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and for Information, Communication and the Arts, was the guest of honour.
The highlight of the evening was the American duo Jason and DeMarco, an out-and-proud gay couple. The earlier attempt to arrange a concert featuring them, in April 2005, was met with a stern rejection by the Media Development Authority (MDA), on the ground that “alternative lifestyles are against the public interest”.
Even this time, the MDA imposed a ridiculous condition on Safehaven - that there be no publicity about the event.
Other artistes performing in the concert included Hossan Leong, Chua En-lai, Selena Tan and Nominated Member of Parliament Eunice Olsen.
